Ball & Doggett has introduced a new range of cartonboard swatch kits tailored for the Australian market to assist printers, designers, and brand owners in evaluating board performance via actual packaging applications instead of just specification sheets.

Australia’s packaging sector increasingly prioritizes suitable fibre-based solutions, and Ball & Doggett’s Cartonboard Swatch Kits target this trend. The kits offer a hands-on, application-focused reference for assessing cartonboard grades during printing and converting.

The debut collection showcases four key grades from the distributor’s lineup: Barry Bleach Board, Sumo Super Hi-Bulk GC1, Sumo Celsius GC2, and Sumo Greyback. Each appears in practical packaging forms rather than isolated samples.

The kits prioritize real-world production results over isolated board traits. They contain a wrap-around wallet and tuck-end carton with DL-sized sample cards for testing scoring, folding, die-cutting, gluing, and finishing.

Josh Gleeson, marketing executive at Ball & Doggett, noted the approach matches on-press and finishing decision-making processes.

“We wanted to create a tool that genuinely supports the way printers and designers work,” Gleeson said. “These swatches bridge the gap between specification sheets and what actually happens on press, making material selection simpler and more informed.”

Samples display topside and underside performance—Greyback topside only—revealing print quality, surface behavior, and structure in final formats. Coatings and embellishments are compared for creative and technical review.

Each wallet provides technical details like reel sizes, application fit, and mill certifications, serving as a practical guide for creative and production staff.

Tammy Arhontissas, national manager for fibre-based packaging at Ball & Doggett, stated the kits streamline board choices.

“By showing real production outcomes, we’re helping customers choose materials based not just on specification, but on proven performance,” she said.
