The Austrian ordering platform Lieferando is introducing delivery boxes with Xampla’s innovative Morro™ coating to Austria for the first time. Suitable for a wide range of foods and dishes, the packaging features the world’s first plastic-free coating for takeaway containers made from plant protein. The multiple award-winning innovation is now available to all Lieferando restaurant partners. Its launch is made possible through an international collaboration with packaging manufacturer Huhtamaki.

Made from sustainably sourced corrugated cardboard, finished with a plastic-free Morro coating, and fully biodegradable with Huhtamaki’s new folding boxes, Lieferando Austria is now offering its 4,800 restaurant partners a more environmentally friendly alternative to conventional takeaway packaging. But the new packaging range stands out not only for its sustainability.

“Thanks to their durability and thermal insulation, these packages are suitable for a wide range of foods and dishes—including greasy meals that are traditionally difficult to transport,” says Lieferando Managing Director Natascha Mauthner.

The packaging innovation has already been successfully tested in the UK and Germany. Feedback from those markets confirms that demand for eco-friendly packaging remains strong.

“We’re all the more pleased that this unique solution can now be ordered via our partner webshop in Austria and used by our local restaurant partners,” explains Mauthner.

A world-first, award-winning coating

At the heart of the packaging lies the Morro coating—an innovation by UK-based company Xampla, a leading expert in material innovation and development. Made from plants and produced without chemical modification, the Morro coating is recyclable and biodegradable in all environments, making it a versatile option for food delivery.

“We are excited to work with Lieferando and Huhtamaki—two forward-thinking partners who share our commitment to reducing plastic pollution,” says Xampla CEO Alexandra French. “Our Morro coating is designed to integrate seamlessly into existing packaging processes and offers a high-performance alternative to plastic. Together, we are setting a new standard for environmentally conscious food packaging.”

The innovation has already won multiple awards this year: “Packaging of the Year” at the Responsible Packaging Expo Awards 2025; “Innovation of the Year” at the UK Packaging Awards 2025; Gold in the “Food-on-the-go: Takeaway” category at the Environmental Packaging Live Awards 2025; and Silver in the “Eco-pack of the Year Award” category at the Grocer New Product and Packaging Awards 2025. It also won the “E-Commerce” category at this year’s Sustainability Awards at the Sustainable Packaging Summit.

Plastic reduction as a strategic priority

The introduction of sustainable alternatives to single-use plastics aligns with the global ambition of Lieferando’s parent company, Just Eat Takeaway.com, to reduce plastic consumption within its sphere of influence. Through its partnership with Huhtamaki, Lieferando is expanding the range of sustainable packaging options in Austria in line with this global strategy, giving partners the opportunity to use plastic-free alternatives that comply with the EU’s single-use plastics directive for delivery and takeaway.
