Global packaging leader Amcor has announced a framework outlining seven sustainability options designed to support the shift toward circular, low-carbon packaging solutions.

In a newly released explainer video, the company presents a clear structure aimed at helping brands, retailers and consumers better understand sustainable packaging choices and reduce overall environmental impact.

Amcor’s seven sustainability options focus on improving packaging design, material selection and end-of-life outcomes. According to the company, these pathways include:

  • Recyclable packaging that can be collected, sorted and processed through existing recycling systems.

  • Reusable packaging intended for refill or multiple uses to reduce single-use consumption.

  • Compostable materials that break down naturally under specific composting conditions.

  • Post-Consumer Recycled (PCR) content to reduce reliance on virgin materials and support recycling markets.

  • Bio-based materials derived from renewable sources instead of fossil fuels.

  • Responsibly sourced materials from certified and sustainable supply chains.

  • Lower-carbon footprint designs through innovation in materials, manufacturing and transportation.

Amcor stated that the options are not “one-size-fits-all” solutions, but rather a set of tools to guide decision-making depending on product needs, regional infrastructure and sustainability objectives.

The company emphasized that packaging sustainability is more than just recyclability — it includes reducing emissions, minimizing material use, supporting recycling systems, and selecting responsible sourcing methods.

Industry analysts view this framework as part of a global push by packaging manufacturers to respond to growing environmental regulations, consumer expectations, and corporate sustainability commitments.

With packaging waste continuing to challenge waste management systems worldwide, initiatives such as this aim to create transparency and encourage smarter design choices across the supply chain.

Amcor says its long-term goal is to lead the transition to a circular economy where packaging is reused, recycled, or responsibly composted instead of ending up as waste.
