Pro Carton, the European Association of Carton and Cartonboard Manufacturers, has appointed Andreas Birmoser, Executive Vice President, Cartonboard at Stora Enso, as its new President.

Birmoser succeeds Michele Bianchi, Chief Executive Officer of RDM Group, who served as President for the past four years. During Bianchi's tenure, Pro Carton oversaw the integration of another cartonboard association and expanded its role into a broader industry body as the sector prepared for the implementation of the European Union's Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR).

Birmoser brings more than 20 years of experience in the forest products and cartonboard industries. In his current role at Stora Enso, he is responsible for the company's global cartonboard business. His previous leadership positions include Chief Executive Officer of Veracel Celulose, as well as senior management roles across Europe and South America focused on strategy, commercial development, operational management, and business transformation.

Commenting on his appointment, Birmoser said the industry is operating in an environment shaped by economic uncertainty, evolving regulation, and changing market expectations. He said Pro Carton has an important role in bringing the industry together, strengthening its collective voice, and engaging with policymakers and stakeholders across Europe.

Horst Bittermann, Director General of Pro Carton, said Birmoser's experience and previous service on the Pro Carton Board since 2023 provide a strong foundation for leading the association through its next phase of development.

As President, Birmoser will work with the Pro Carton Board to strengthen collaboration across the packaging value chain, promote fibre-based packaging, and support the development of science- and fact-based policies aimed at enhancing competitiveness and sustainability within the European cartonboard industry.
