Archroma Packaging Technologies has launched Erthana, a bio-based solutions platform designed to help paper, packaging and tissue producers meet sustainability objectives while maintaining packaging performance.

The platform combines bio-based chemistries, technical expertise and application support to help manufacturers transition towards circular packaging. It is also intended to support compliance with evolving regulatory requirements, including the European Union’s Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) and Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) laws.

Erthana launches with two products: Erthana OGB, a bio-based oil and grease barrier, and Erthana DSR, a bio-based dry strength resin. Additional products are in development and are expected to join the portfolio in 2027.

According to Archroma, Erthana solutions use ingredients from natural sources that do not compete with the food chain. The company said the products are designed to reduce dependence on fossil-based chemistries while maintaining packaging functionality, product integrity and operational efficiency.

Food-contact compliance and end-of-life performance were key requirements during product development. Archroma stated that Erthana solutions are compliant with requirements associated with the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Germany’s Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) and the Biodegradable Products Institute (BPI).

Lisa Clark, vice president of marketing and sustainability at Archroma Packaging Technologies, said packaging producers and brand owners face increasing pressure to move away from fossil-based materials and comply with packaging regulations without compromising performance.

Clark said the platform combines sustainability objectives with production-proven chemistry, providing customers with an approach to advancing circular packaging.

The launch expands Archroma Packaging Technologies’ bio-based solutions offering for the paper and packaging value chain, with further products planned as the platform develops.
