Coca-Cola HBC, a key bottling partner of Coca-Cola, has launched the fully recyclable cardboard 'Lift Up' handle in collaboration with DS Smith and Krones, replacing plastic shrink wrap on 1.5-liter soda multipacks. Currently undergoing trials in Austria, this fiber-based innovation is projected to eliminate approximately 200 metric tons of plastic annually from the supply chain, while reducing emissions in manufacturing, packing, and distribution. Marcel Martin, Coca-Cola HBC’s Chief Corporate Affairs and Sustainability Officer, highlighted its role in achieving net-zero emissions by 2040, emphasizing ongoing investments in sustainable delivery methods.
The simple yet effective handle addresses a major environmental challenge in beverage packaging, complemented by a new wraparound recyclable label that cuts additional plastic marketing materials. Similar successes include paper-based six-pack rings and decomposable bioplastics. Despite fiber production's tree harvesting and emissions, experts note minimization through renewable energy and sustainably managed forests. This development signals broader industry momentum toward eco-friendly alternatives amid rising pressure to curb plastic pollution in consumer goods packaging.
