Duni Group has announced that it eliminated per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) from its products before regulatory requirements mandated the move, positioning the decision as part of its broader sustainability strategy and preparation for upcoming EU legislation.
The company said the phase-out was completed in advance of the European Union’s proposed Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), which is expected to introduce stricter rules on the use of PFAS in food packaging. PFAS, often referred to as “forever chemicals,” are used for their grease- and water-resistant properties but have raised environmental and health concerns due to their persistence.
Duni Group stated that the transition required adjustments in materials and product design to maintain functionality without relying on PFAS-based treatments. The company emphasized that the shift aligns with its long-term goal of offering more sustainable and compliant packaging solutions.
According to the company, acting ahead of regulation enables it to support customers in adapting to future legal requirements while reducing potential risks linked to restricted substances. The move also reflects increasing market demand for safer and more environmentally responsible food packaging products.
The announcement comes as the EU continues to advance PPWR, which aims to reduce packaging waste and improve recyclability across member states. Restrictions on hazardous substances such as PFAS form part of the broader regulatory framework.
Duni Group, headquartered in Malmö, Sweden, provides sustainable dining and food packaging solutions for the hospitality and retail sectors.
