Elemental Clean Fuels partners with Sc.wén̓wen Economic Development and Kruger Kamloops Pulp to develop a 10MW green hydrogen facility at Kruger's Kamloops pulp mill in British Columbia, Canada. The project aims to replace 16% of the mill's natural gas consumption with up to four tonnes of hydrogen produced daily via electrolysis, potentially reducing CO2 emissions by 7,000 tonnes annually. The facility will also generate 32 tonnes of oxygen daily, which the mill can reuse to enhance pulp processing and whitening while cutting reliance on harsher chemicals.
Kruger acquired the softwood kraft pulp mill from Domtar in 2022. Feasibility studies are complete, and the partners now advance front-end engineering design, seeking long-term offtake agreements and a final investment decision. This marks ECF's inaugural public project since its 2023 launch as a technology-agnostic developer focused on North American green hydrogen initiatives.
The initiative supports sustainability in the pulp sector by integrating renewable hydrogen into operations, boosting efficiency and environmental performance at the Kamloops site.
