Stora Enso's Imatra Mill has achieved a significant milestone in its environmental performance, contributing to the company's long-term sustainability goals. This is a significant step towards a more responsible future.
The Imatra mills have reduced both direct and energy-related greenhouse gas emissions to historically low levels.
"Our specific emissions (scope 1+2) from our Imatra mills are now 104 kg CO₂e per tonne produced, which is a significant improvement in just a few years (2019: 191 kg CO₂e). At the same time, our total emissions have decreased by more than 100,000 tonnes CO₂e compared to 2019," says Teemu Klemetti , Environmental Manager at Stora Enso's Imatra mills.
"For the first time ever, in 2025, our wastewater volume fell below 50 m³ per tonne produced, to be precise 49.4 m³. In addition, our total sulphur emissions (sulphur compounds and odorous compounds) to the air were the lowest in history, as were our nitrogen oxide emissions," Klemetti continues.
A culture of continuous improvement
These achievements are the result of continuous improvement at the Imatra mills: developing and optimizing production processes, improving energy efficiency, and a strong commitment to responsible operations towards customers and the local community.
“This development reflects the dedication and cooperation of our entire staff. Over the past years, we have systematically improved our processes to reduce emissions and increase resource efficiency. The next steps will focus on further optimizing water management and moving towards completely fossil-free operations by 2030,” says Klemetti.
"By developing our wastewater treatment and energy systems, we can even more strongly support Stora Enso's climate goals. We are adjusting our own energy production to minimize the use of fossil fuels," continues Klemetti.
Stora Enso's environmental goals guide the mills' sustainability work
"Stora Enso's Imatra mills are committed to promoting sustainability goals. Our journey towards lower emissions and more climate-friendly production continues step by step towards a more responsible future," says Klemetti.
We will reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 50% by 2030 from 2019 levels in both our own production (Scope 1 & 2) and the value chain (Scope 3).
We will achieve 100% technically recyclable products by 2030.
We will achieve a positive impact on biodiversity by 2050 through active biodiversity management in our own forests and plantations .
Stora Enso's Imatra unit consists of two production units: Kaukopää and Tainionkoski mills , which produce more than one million tonnes of chemical pulp and consumer board annually.
The Imatra mills produce the amount of liquid packaging board used in Finland per week . Over 90 percent of the production is exported to Europe and Southeast Asia.
