Fire Breaks Out at International Paper Plant in Lowndes County

A fire broke out at an International Paper plant off Cason Road in Lowndes County on Monday evening, September 22, prompting responses from multiple fire departments.

Fire Coordinator Jim Robbins said crews were called to the plant at about 7:30 p.m. Industrial Fire & Rescue and Columbus Fire & Rescue assisted the Lowndes County Volunteer Fire Department in extinguishing the blaze.

When firefighters arrived, the fire was in elevated positions. Officials said outside structures at the plant caught fire, while no fire occurred inside the main plant building.

Firefighters contained the flames and prevented them from reaching the main building. No injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
