Mondi has worked with building materials supplier FIXIT GRUPPE to standardise its paper bag packaging portfolio for more than 100 products across European markets, a project that the companies said reduced associated greenhouse gas emissions by 135 tonnes of CO₂ per year compared with the previous year.
FIXIT GRUPPE had developed a fragmented range of paper bag grades and formats over time, reflecting differing product requirements, climate conditions and local regulations. The company sought to simplify its packaging portfolio while maintaining product protection, compatibility with existing filling machinery and its climate and resource-efficiency objectives.
Mondi conducted an audit at its Bag Application Centre in Frantschach, Austria, reviewing factors including paper grammage, barrier requirements and the thickness of plastic inner layers. Based on the assessment, the companies developed a unified portfolio of standardised paper bag formats for different building materials and European markets.
Mondi supplied sack kraft paper from its own mills and produced paper valve bags designed to provide moisture protection and support reliable filling on FIXIT GRUPPE's existing machinery. The bags were assessed using the 4evergreen fibre-based packaging recyclability evaluation protocol.
Davide Battiston, International Key Account Manager at Mondi Paper Bags Italy, said the project involved analysing FIXIT GRUPPE's full product range and applying papermaking and converting expertise to develop a standardised solution without compromising performance.
Bernhard Zott, Director of Research & Development at FIXIT GRUPPE, said the company required packaging that could protect a wide range of building materials, remain practical on construction sites and support its climate strategy.
The project has resulted in a more consistent packaging approach across European markets while maintaining the required protection and performance for FIXIT GRUPPE's product range, according to the companies.
