Baiersbronn Frischfaser Karton GmbH, a German producer of virgin-fiber folding boxboard, has filed for insolvency with the District Court in Rottweil as the European carton industry continues to face challenges including high energy costs, structural overcapacity, and weak market conditions.

The court has appointed restructuring specialist Dr. Jan Markus Plathner of Brinkmann & Partner as preliminary insolvency administrator. He will be supported by Christoph Enkler and Sebastian Netzel during the restructuring process.

The company stated that production at its Baiersbronn carton mill is continuing without interruption. Wages for approximately 220 employees have been secured through insolvency wage pre-financing for June, July, and August 2026.

Baiersbronn Frischfaser Karton manufactures high-grade virgin-fiber folding boxboard primarily used in packaging for the food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetics sectors. The company operates a single production facility in Baiersbronn and recently reported annual revenue of approximately €80 million.

According to Brinkmann & Partner, the company had implemented cost-reduction measures but was unable to achieve a sustainable improvement in liquidity. Plathner said his immediate priorities are to stabilize operations, maintain delivery capability, evaluate restructuring options, and pursue an investor through a structured sales process.

The restructuring team said discussions have already begun with key customers, suppliers, and other stakeholders to support business continuity while a long-term restructuring plan is developed. The objective is to preserve operations and secure employment where possible.

The insolvency filing comes as manufacturers across Europe's cartonboard sector continue to navigate rising operating costs and challenging market conditions.
