International Paper, a major packaging company, announced the closure of its production plants in Valls (Alt Camp) and Montblanc (Conca de Barberà), Catalonia, Spain, affecting about 200 workers through a workforce reduction plan (ERE).

The CCOO union rejected the plan, calling it a "disguised relocation" and denying any economic crisis in the expanding packaging sector; they claim orders were diverted to other plants.

The closures form part of a "strategic review" of operations in Spain, Portugal, and Morocco to boost efficiency amid market challenges, following recent expansions via acquisitions.

Local authorities, including Valls and Montblanc city councils, oppose the move and seek meetings or alternatives to save jobs.
