IPEL, a Brazilian manufacturer of sanitary paper products, has launched a new antimicrobial technology for its toilet paper and paper towel product lines, aiming to enhance hygiene and consumer protection in products frequently exposed to microorganisms.

The technology, branded as IPEL Protech, was developed by the company's Research and Development team in partnership with TNS Nano. According to IPEL, the technology is integrated into the paper structure and acts on the surface of the product, creating a protective barrier intended to prevent bacteria from adhering to and multiplying on the paper.

The company said the antimicrobial action remains active throughout the product's use, from the first sheet to the last. IPEL also stated that the toilet paper products incorporating the technology have undergone dermatological testing as well as gynecological acceptability testing.

Luciano de Liz Barboza, Chief Executive Officer of IPEL, said the launch reflects the company’s ongoing focus on innovation, consumer safety, and well-being.

According to the company, additional testing was conducted to evaluate product performance and safety under different usage conditions as part of the development process.

To support the market introduction of the new technology, IPEL partnered with Dr. Bacteria, a Brazilian hygiene and health specialist, who is participating in the product launch campaign. He said the technology is incorporated into the paper itself rather than applied as an external treatment and is designed to help inhibit bacterial growth on the paper’s surface.

The IPEL Protech technology is being introduced across selected product lines, including Ness and Qualité toilet paper products and Nobby paper towels.

The launch forms part of the company’s broader strategy focused on product innovation and the development of hygiene solutions for the consumer tissue market.
