Kimberly-Clark Unveils Alternative Natural Fiber Program to Advance Sustainable Hygiene Products

Kimberly-Clark Corporation has launched a proprietary innovation program focused on developing alternative natural fibers as the foundation for a next-generation sustainable materials platform for hygiene products, supporting the company's Better Care for a Better World commitment.

The company said its researchers have developed a patented technology platform that transforms fibers from a rapidly renewable succulent plant into a sustainable material designed for use in future hygiene products. According to Kimberly-Clark, the new material has the potential to improve product performance, quality and sustainability while reducing reliance on traditional forest-based fiber sources.

The innovation program builds on more than two decades of materials and plant science research. Kimberly-Clark said ongoing testing indicates the alternative natural fiber could strengthen long-term supply chain resilience while supporting the development of higher-value, differentiated hygiene products.

Craig Slavtcheff, Chief Research and Development Officer at Kimberly-Clark, said the initiative represents the culmination of the company's long-term research into alternative fibers. He added that early testing results suggest the material has the potential to deliver improved product performance while enhancing sustainability and reducing dependence on conventional fiber sources.

As part of the research program, Kimberly-Clark evaluated more than 70 fiber candidates based on performance, sustainability and cost. The company identified hesperaloe, a native low-water-use succulent that grows in the arid climate of the southwestern United States, as the most promising alternative fiber source.

Kimberly-Clark said it is establishing a pilot production facility in Yuma, Arizona, and recruiting specialized local talent to support the program. The company is also working with growers, technical experts and community stakeholders across Arizona, California and the broader U.S. Southwest to assess hesperaloe's potential as a year-round agricultural crop and fiber source.

According to the company, hesperaloe requires less water to cultivate than several crops currently grown in the region, offering potential benefits for growers, local communities and regional water stewardship.

Kimberly-Clark said the proprietary fiber technology could eventually be integrated across its hygiene products portfolio, supporting future product innovation, strengthening fiber supply resilience and advancing responsible stewardship of natural resources. The company noted that performance claims are based on internal research comparing the alternative natural fibers with the traditional forest-based fibers currently used in its hygiene products.
