Kotka, Finland — Kotka Mills has initiated restructuring negotiations at its production site in Kotka, south-eastern Finland, as part of a review of its organisational structure and cost base. The process may affect up to 31 positions at the mill.

The negotiations involve approximately half of the company’s workforce and include employees across multiple personnel groups. The discussions are based on planned operational and financial adjustments intended to strengthen the company’s efficiency and long-term competitiveness.

According to Chief Executive Officer Marko Pekkola, the negotiations are related to organisational changes being considered for production and economic reasons.

“The negotiations are based on reorganisations under consideration for production and financial reasons and involve all personnel groups within the company, with roughly half of the employees included in the talks,” Pekkola said.

The changes being evaluated may affect several areas of the organisation. Potential adjustments include modifications to work arrangements, changes to job responsibilities, updates to job titles and the redistribution of duties between staff groups.

The consultation period is expected to last three weeks, during which the company will work with employee representatives to assess possible operational adjustments and their impact on the workforce.

Kotka Mills produces packaging board primarily used in food packaging, beverage containers and other carton-based products. The Kotka mill is an important industrial employer in the region and part of Finland’s export-oriented forest industry.

The company stated that the negotiations are part of its broader effort to respond to changing market conditions in the European forest industry, where rising energy costs, shifting trade dynamics and slower economic growth have increased pressure on producers to improve efficiency and optimise operations.

Further information will be provided once the consultation process has been completed.
