The Wayagamack mill in Trois-Rivières is progressing with the construction of a pioneering carbon capture facility based on innovative technology developed by Mantel, a startup founded by MIT alumni. The demonstration unit, set to operate in 2026, will capture up to 5 tonnes of CO₂ daily, which will then be directly reused in the paper production process, marking an industrial first. Mantel’s technology uses molten salts to absorb CO₂ efficiently at high temperatures, while generating useful steam for industrial processes, reducing energy consumption by up to 97% compared to traditional systems. Funded partly by the Canadian government and Kruger Corporation, this project aims to significantly lower carbon emissions in the pulp and paper industry and serve as a scalable model for industrial decarbonization worldwide.
