Kuantum Papers Ltd has commenced a planned 30-day shutdown of its Paper Machine-3 (PM-3) to carry out technology and efficiency upgrades aimed at enhancing operational performance and supporting the production of higher-value paper grades.
According to the company, the temporary shutdown will affect only PM-3, while its remaining paper machines will continue operating. As a result, approximately 70% to 80% of the company's total production capacity will remain available during the maintenance period.
The company estimates that the shutdown will reduce production volumes by approximately 2,200 to 2,500 metric tonnes during the 30-day period.
Kuantum Papers said the project is intended to improve the machine's operational efficiency while reducing power and chemical consumption. The upgrade also supports the company's strategy of expanding its specialty paper portfolio and improving product quality.
The company expects the remainder of its manufacturing network, including the larger PM-4 production line, to continue supplying customers during the shutdown, limiting disruption to existing supply commitments.
The modernization follows a series of operational improvements undertaken by Kuantum Papers. According to the company, it has reduced net debt by approximately ₹125 crore over the past four quarters and has increased the contribution of specialty paper products to its overall revenue mix. The company also reported improvements in operating costs following optimization of its chemical recovery plant in early 2024.
The PM-3 refurbishment is part of Kuantum Papers' broader strategy to improve manufacturing efficiency and strengthen its position in higher-margin paper segments while maintaining its existing production capacity through its other operating paper machines.
