Lecta has commissioned a new metallizing line at its Leitza mill in Navarra, Spain, developed in collaboration with BOBST, to enhance the performance and production of metallized barrier papers.
The new installation, named Leitzaran after the nearby river, has been operational since February 1, 2026. It represents the third BOBST metallizer installed at the site and marks a significant expansion in metallizing capacity, alongside improvements in process consistency, efficiency and scalability.
The line is based on the EXPERT K5 2450mm metallizer, specifically configured for Lecta. It incorporates advanced technologies including BOBST’s Intelligent Metallizer Assistant (iMA), which enables automatic control of the deposition process, and AluBond® technology, designed to improve aluminium layer adhesion and enhance barrier properties across substrates.
According to the companies, the system delivers higher production speeds, improved precision in aluminium layer control, and a broader coating window. It supports paper widths of up to 240 cm and basis weights ranging from 35 to 300 g/m², offering increased production flexibility.
“The commissioning of the Leitzaran metallizing line marks an important milestone for the Leitza mill,” said Igor Iceta, Mill Director at Lecta. “The integration of technologies such as AluBond® and BOBST iMA enables the consistent production of high-performance metallized barrier papers for demanding packaging applications.”
The investment aligns with Lecta’s strategy to expand its metallized paper portfolio, particularly in flexible packaging, while maintaining its presence in wet-glue and label segments. The company has broadened its range of metallized solutions over the past two years.
Pedro Bartulos, Technology Sales Manager at BOBST, noted that Lecta is the first company globally to install the iMA system on its equipment. He added that the Leitzaran machine features the largest reel diameter produced for an EXPERT K5, at 1.5 meters.
The companies said the new line strengthens Lecta’s ability to supply converters and brand owners with consistent, high-performance metallized papers as demand grows for improved barrier properties and automated, data-driven production processes.
