Mercer Peace River Pulp Ltd., a subsidiary of Mercer International Inc., and Svante Technologies Inc. have started operating a CO₂ capture demonstration unit at the Peace River pulp mill in northern Alberta. The initiative evaluates Svante’s solid sorbent technology on biogenic emissions from the recovery boiler flue gas, building on prior Front-End Engineering and Design Phase 2 that covered site integration, costs, and risks for potential commercial deployment. Over the next six months, the pilot will generate essential technical and operational data to guide future engineering phases and long-term decarbonization planning. Mercer’s Chief Sustainability Officer Bill Adams noted this cost-efficient step allows evaluation in real operating conditions, informing scale-up for biogenic emissions reduction across Canadian pulp sites. Svante’s Scott Gardner stressed testing in a live mill environment as key to broader industry carbon capture opportunities. Mercer operates globally with 2.1 million tonnes annual pulp capacity, focusing on sustainability amid regulatory pressures. Advancement hinges on results, economics, and technical feasibility, aligning with pulp sector ESG goals amid rising decarbonization demands.
