Metsä Board’s Äänekoski board mill is celebrating the 60th anniversary of its board machine KK1 and the current board mill operations. The milestone highlights six decades of paperboard production in central Finland within Metsä Group’s bioeconomy ecosystem.
Board machine KK1, with a trim width of 3.60 meters, speed of 800 m/min, and grammage range of 180-350 g/m², forms a core part of the facility alongside a winder and three sheet cutters. The mill produces fully coated bleached paperboards for high-performance packaging and graphical applications.
Located in Äänekoski, the mill integrates with nearby operations including Metsä Fibre’s bioproduct mill, Metsä Wood birch plywood mill, Pro Nemus visitor centre, Metsä Spring textile fibre pilot plant, and a 3D product pilot plant. All wood raw material traces to sustainably managed Northern European PEFC- or FSC-certified forests or controlled origins.
The facility commits to Metsä Board’s goal of fossil-free mills and products by 2030, emphasizing environmental responsibility in board manufacturing.
