Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation (MCC) announced a high-performance paper coating using its proprietary SoarnoL ethylene vinyl alcohol (EVOH) copolymer.

The technology from MCC, an organic chemical company, targets food packaging materials. The innovation employs SoarnoL, MCC's barrier ethylene vinyl alcohol copolymer, and sheets. SoarnoL preserves food flavor and quality longer, thereby reducing waste.

The coating process applies SoarnoL solution with an anchor coating agent to achieve the same gas and oil-resistant properties traditionally obtained with PFAS-based paper substrates solely. This surpasses conventional PFAS-enhanced packaging materials under high temperatures and folding. MCC notes SoarnoL meets direct food contact hygiene standards for fried chicken, hamburgers, and other fast food.

Global PFAS regulations target adaptation in fiscal demand for 2026. PFAS alternatives are expected to grow, MCC plans to seek customers.

MCC will showcase the technology at New Functional Materials EXPO 2026, scheduled January 29–31 at Tokyo Big Sight.

MCC emphasizes development aligns with "KATEI 35," identifying food preservation as strategic focus. The company stated conscious materials supporting food quality preservation contribute to social sustainability.
