Mondi has developed recyclable packaging made from brown kraftliner with white digital printing for long-standing customer Riedel Glas to support the launch of the All American Bourbon glass series.
The packaging design includes fine lines, small font sizes and integrated QR codes, placing high demands on print precision and consistency. Mondi said it used high-performance digital printing technology to reproduce complex graphic elements on uncoated brown substrates.
Digital printing operates through data-to-print technology and does not require printing plates or clichés. Ink is applied directly to the material in fine droplets, enabling detailed image reproduction and flexible production processes.
Following a recent investment in white digital printing technology at Mondi’s Ebersdorf site in Germany, the company said it can now achieve higher opacity and sharper print edges on brown kraftliner substrates, supporting premium packaging designs.
Mondi added that the technology also enables multiple print variants within a single production order, allowing regional adaptations and targeted designs without additional set-up requirements. Serialised barcodes and QR codes can also be integrated to support product traceability and automated supply chain processes.
The resulting sales packaging is fully recyclable while meeting the design and quality requirements of Riedel Glas, the Austria-based premium glassware manufacturer headquartered in Kufstein.
The project builds on the long-standing collaboration between the two companies and their focus on packaging innovation and product quality.
