Mondi has partnered with online automotive parts marketplace Ovoko to develop a heavy-duty eCommerce packaging solution for oversized car bumpers, reducing unit packaging costs by up to 42%.
The companies said the redesigned corrugated packaging was created to address challenges associated with shipping large and fragile automotive parts through eCommerce logistics networks. According to Mondi, Ovoko’s previous packaging system was costly and did not provide sufficient protection, leading to product damage and increased operational workload.
Mondi adapted an existing heavy-duty packaging concept to fit the geometry of automotive bumpers more precisely, reducing empty space and lowering material use. The company said the packaging was designed to improve protection during transit while simplifying assembly and packing operations.
Following testing under real-life shipping conditions, the packaging solution was approved, and the first trial order was delivered within two weeks, according to the company.
Agnius Skudutis, Packaging Project Manager at Ovoko, said the marketplace required packaging that was “simple to assemble, cost-effective and tough enough to deliver a high level of protection” while accommodating a wide range of automotive parts sizes.
Mondi said the project also improved operational efficiency across Ovoko’s logistics chain by enabling faster packing processes and reducing returns linked to transit damage.
The packaging supplier, which operates globally in paper and packaging solutions, said the collaboration demonstrates how automotive packaging expertise can be adapted for eCommerce applications involving complex or oversized products.
