Nestlé is making a significant sustainability shift by replacing the plastic outer wrap of KitKat multipacks sold in France with paper packaging, aiming to cut 24 tons of plastic waste annually. While individual KitKat bars still retain plastic wrapping, the company plans to extend this change across Europe by the end of 2025. The move addresses growing environmental concerns over plastic pollution and microplastic contamination affecting wildlife and human health. Nestlé sources 93.5% of its paper sustainably, mostly free from deforestation, yet acknowledges the environmental tradeoffs of increased paper use. Despite past plastic pollution controversies, Nestlé champions this innovation as part of broader climate efforts amid challenges like declining cocoa yields. This change marks a major milestone for KitKat as it celebrates its 90th anniversary.
