New Sustainable Paper Factory Projected in Mérida’s Tixcacal Area

Guanajuato-based manufacturing company Grupo Reyma plans to construct and operate a household paper and compostable products factory in Tixcacal, a sub-municipality of Mérida.

Yucatán’s Ministry of Sustainable Development (SDS) announced on Tuesday, June 16, 2026, that an Environmental Impact Assessment (MIA) authorization has been requested for the project, officially named “Reyma del Sureste.” Spanning over 9.8 hectares near the local landfill, the facility will feature production areas, corporate offices, warehouses, and green spaces. It will manufacture domestic paper goods, such as napkins and toilet paper, alongside eco-friendly compostable food containers.

The industrial site comprises two plots acquired in 2025 by Reyma partner Vicente Reyes Magaña for 25.3 million pesos. Local records reveal that part of the land was previously owned by Gabriel Guzmán Millet, a controversial businessman tied to high-profile land speculation scandals.

The SDS has opened a five-day public consultation period, allowing residents to review the environmental impact report and submit feedback or mitigation proposals. This project marks a significant regional expansion for Reyma, which originally specialized in plastics before adding paper lines to meet modern green demands.
