Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro has entered a short-term power purchase agreement with Corner Brook Pulp and Paper Limited to acquire clean hydroelectricity, providing stability while the province evaluates Kruger’s proposed diversification project for the mill. Corner Brook Pulp and Paper remains a long-standing employer in rural Newfoundland and Labrador and a cornerstone of the provincial forestry industry, underpinning jobs and regional economic activity. The Provincial Government emphasized that the arrangement creates space to assess how the diversification plan can strengthen rural economies and ensure residents remain the primary beneficiaries of local natural resources. Ministers highlighted that the temporary agreement offers NL Hydro additional capacity at a lower cost compared with a previous deal, while due diligence on Kruger’s proposal continues. The initiative is framed as supporting growth, sustainability, and long-term viability for both the power system and the forest sector in the province.
