Norske Skog Golbey PM1 Containerboard Machine Achieves Key Milestones in Strategic Transformation

Norske Skog’s Golbey mill in France has successfully commenced the start-up phase of its containerboard machine PM1, marking a critical milestone in the company’s strategic shift from newsprint to packaging paper production. The PM1 machine, converted from a former newsprint line, has a capacity of 550,000 tonnes per year and began producing initial paper reels in late May 2025. Ramp-up activities continued through Q3, achieving 20-30% utilization, with full capacity targeted for the first half of 2027. The project reflects a net capital investment of approximately EUR 320 million and is integral to strengthening Norske Skog’s footprint in the European containerboard market. CEO Geir Drangsland emphasized the project’s importance for future growth and competitiveness despite initial ramp-up challenges. Additionally, the Golbey site benefits from renewable energy supplied by the newly commissioned biomass plant, positioning Norske Skog favorably in terms of sustainability and innovation.
