Nippon Paper Industries Co., Ltd. has provided an updated report on a fatal industrial accident at its U.S. subsidiary, Nippon Dynawave Packaging (NDP), following the collapse of a chemical tank at the company’s facility in Washington State.

According to the company, the incident occurred at approximately 7:00 a.m. local time on May 26 when a chemical tank collapsed at the site. The cause of the accident remains under investigation by relevant authorities.

As of 3:30 p.m. local time on May 29, the accident had resulted in nine fatalities, while two individuals remained missing. Eight people were reported injured. The company said it is continuing to gather additional information regarding the casualties.

Nippon Paper expressed condolences to those who lost their lives and extended sympathies to the bereaved families and all others affected by the incident. The company also apologized for the concern and disruption caused to the local community, business partners and related parties.

The company confirmed damage to one chemical tank at the facility. The broader impact of the accident on the environment, production operations, shipments and financial performance is still being assessed.

NDP is working with local police and fire authorities under local regulations and the Incident Command System (ICS), an emergency response framework standardized under the U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). Efforts to secure the site and continue the search for the missing individuals remain ongoing.
