The Ogun State Waste Management Authority has sealed Dahua Paper Company Ltd. over allegations that the Nigerian paper manufacturer operated an unauthorized dumpsite, carried out open burning of waste and pushed waste toward a nearby river used by surrounding communities.
According to reporting by Punch Healthwise, citing the News Agency of Nigeria, the enforcement action followed months of monitoring and intelligence gathering by the waste management authority. The operation was overseen by the agency's managing director, Farouk Akintunde.
Authorities alleged that an illegal dumpsite had been established opposite the company's factory in Owowo Village and was being used for waste disposal and open burning. The reported activities were said to violate Ogun State's 2006 environmental and public health law.
Officials also allegedly discovered waste being pushed toward a river adjacent to the dumpsite. The agency seized two trucks that were allegedly used to transport waste for dumping.
Akintunde said the alleged dumping and open burning could create environmental risks, including potential contamination of surface water and groundwater, according to Punch Healthwise.
The facility will remain closed while authorities continue their investigation and pursue legal action, the report said.
Akintunde said the enforcement action should serve as a warning to other facilities involved in illegal dumping or the open burning of waste.
