Japan’s Oji Group has broken ground on a $110 million aseptic carton packaging plant in Dong Nai City, southern Vietnam, with operations scheduled to begin in 2028.

The facility, being developed under the group’s Oji Liquid Pak brand, will occupy approximately 57,000 square meters at Long Thanh High-Tech Park. It will manufacture aseptic cartons for beverages and other liquid food products, with a maximum annual production capacity of eight billion cartons.

The project is expected to create more than 200 jobs and expand Vietnam’s role in Oji Group’s manufacturing and supply network across Southeast Asia and international markets.

The groundbreaking ceremony on October 10 was attended by representatives of Oji Group, Oji Liquid Pak, the Dong Nai Industrial Parks and Economic Zones Authority, Amata Industrial Park, the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry, business partners and local companies.

“Vietnam is an important market and is increasingly becoming a strategic manufacturing base in Southeast Asia,” said Mikito Terauchi, an executive officer of Oji Holdings Corporation. He said local production would help the group serve customers in Vietnam and across the Asia-Pacific region.

Nguyen Quoc An, deputy head of the Dong Nai Industrial Parks and Economic Zones Authority, said investments of this scale could support industrial development, strengthen domestic manufacturing capabilities and increase Vietnam’s participation in regional supply chains.

Focus on Circular Packaging

The investment comes as Vietnam’s packaging and consumer goods industries adapt to extended producer responsibility requirements and the transition toward a circular economy.

Oji Liquid Pak said it is drawing on Oji Group’s experience in forestry, paper, packaging and recycling. The group is also promoting aseptic carton collection and recycling across Southeast Asia through technology development and value-chain partnerships.

“The packaging industry is moving toward a new standard where performance, food safety, operational flexibility, and circularity must go hand in hand,” said Kestutis Sliuzas, CEO of Oji Liquid Pak.

The company said its packaging materials are compatible with roll-fed filling machines already in use, allowing manufacturers to retain existing infrastructure. Customers will be able to purchase packaging materials separately or opt for an integrated offering that includes filling equipment and technical services.

Expanding Liquid Packaging Operations

Oji Group expanded its liquid packaging capabilities in 2023 through the acquisition of Italy-based IPI S.r.l., which specializes in aseptic cartons and filling equipment. Oji Liquid Pak was established in Vietnam in 2025 to develop the group’s liquid packaging business in the Asia-Pacific region.

The new plant will extend the group’s existing Asian operations into local manufacturing. Founded in Japan in 1873, Oji Holdings Corporation operates in paper, packaging and forestry resource management. Its Vietnamese businesses include forestry operations, paper manufacturing, three Ojitex Vietnam factories, United Packaging factories and finished packaging solutions.
