Oji Holdings, Kagome and Dynapack Launch Pilot to Recycle Factory Packaging Waste into Corrugated Cardboard

Oji Holdings Corporation, Kagome Co., Ltd., and Dynapack Co., Ltd. have launched a demonstration project to establish a recycling system that converts waste paper from aluminum-lined paper containers generated at Kagome's factories into corrugated cardboard packaging for the company's products.

Under the initiative, waste paper from aluminum-lined paper containers produced at Kagome's Fujimi Plant will be collected and processed by Oji Holdings, which will recover paper fibres through washing and separation. Part of the recovered material will then be used to manufacture corrugated containerboard, while Dynapack will convert the recycled paper into corrugated packaging.

The recycled corrugated cardboard will be used to package Kagome Tomato Juice Premium Unsalted 195ml, a limited-edition summer product manufactured at Kagome's Nasu Plant. The product will be available from 4 August 2026, with the pilot being evaluated through its commercial use.

According to the companies, the initiative is the first project in Japan to recycle waste paper from aluminum-lined paper containers generated at a manufacturer's own factory into corrugated boxes used for its own products. The project aims to promote resource recycling and support the development of a circular economy by reusing paper resources as logistics packaging.

The demonstration comes as Japan seeks to improve the recycling of composite packaging materials. Aluminum-lined paper containers, which are made from paper fibres, polyethylene and aluminum, have historically been difficult to recycle, resulting in relatively low resource recovery rates.

Under the project, Kagome is responsible for collecting waste paper from its Fujimi Plant, Oji Holdings processes the material and manufactures recycled corrugated base paper, and Dynapack converts the recycled paper into corrugated boxes for commercial use.

The three companies said the pilot will assess the feasibility of establishing a new recycling model for difficult-to-recycle paper packaging materials while expanding the use of recycled fibre in packaging applications.
