PacifiCan is investing $5.5 million through its Regional Tariff Response Initiative (RTRI) to support Nanaimo Forest Products’ Harmac Pacific pulp mill, strengthening the facility’s production capacity, efficiency and competitiveness in global markets.

The federal investment will support the installation of new equipment at the Harmac Pacific mill, helping increase production capacity while improving operational efficiency and reducing costs. The project is expected to strengthen the competitiveness of the mill’s Northern Bleached Softwood Kraft (NBSK) pulp products in international markets.

As one of Vancouver Island’s major industrial employers, Harmac Pacific plays an important role in the regional economy and forestry sector. The investment will help support the mill’s long-term resilience and protect jobs in the face of global trade disruptions and changing market conditions.

“Investments like this help strengthen the competitiveness and resilience of British Columbia’s forestry sector while supporting good jobs in communities across the province,” said Gregor Robertson, federal minister responsible for Pacific Economic Development Canada (PacifiCan).

The $5.5-million investment is part of more than $30.5 million in RTRI funding being provided to 24 businesses and organizations across British Columbia. The initiative is designed to help businesses respond to global trade challenges by entering new markets, improving productivity, strengthening supply chains and pursuing new pathways for growth.

Other recipients of this round of RTRI funding in and adjacent to British Columbia’s forestry sector include BC Wood Specialties Group, Canadian Bavarian Millwork & Lumber, Mahler Machining and PowerWood.
