Pixelle Specialty Solutions plans to permanently close its paper mill on Commerce Drive in Fremont, Ohio, after agreeing to sell its carbonless paper business, according to a notice filed with the state on October 2.

The Pennsylvania-based company said 61 employees will be laid off, with the first job cuts scheduled to begin on December 1. Further layoffs will take place in stages as needed to complete production, meet customer commitments and support the business transition.

According to Pixelle’s notice, the buyer plans to move carbonless paper production to a facility in Wisconsin. The notice did not identify the buyer or specify an expected date for the Fremont plant’s closure.

The affected employees are not union-represented and will not have bumping rights, the company said in the filing.

Pixelle’s carbonless paper products are designed for use with offset and digital printing equipment, including high-speed copiers and digital duplicators. The company markets the products for their runnability and performance across these applications.

The planned closure follows another shutdown by Pixelle in Ohio. The company closed its plant in Chillicothe, south of Columbus, in August.

The Fremont closure reflects a change in the company’s carbonless paper operations following the sale agreement, with production expected to transition to Wisconsin under the buyer’s plans.
