A fire erupted on Saturday, 14 February, at Saica's paper production and recycling facility in Zaragoza, Spain. Firefighters from the Zaragoza municipal brigade extinguished the blaze by Sunday afternoon, with no injuries reported. One of the two buildings on the site sustained severe damage to its internal machinery, according to a company spokesperson. Paper production halted temporarily but restarted on 16 February under limited capacity. Investigators continue to probe the fire's cause. The Zaragoza facility houses two paper machines producing high-performance containerboard from 100 percent recycled fiber, mainly testliner and corrugating medium in various grammages. Paper Machine 6 boasts a capacity of 235,000 tonnes per year, while Paper Machine 7 reaches up to 330,000 tonnes per year. Saica maintains additional mills in Spain, France, Poland, and the UK, achieving a total recycled containerboard output of approximately 4 million tonnes annually. As a prominent European integrated paper and packaging firm, Saica encompasses recycling via Saica Natur, corrugated packaging through Saica Pack, and flexible packaging with Saica Flex.
