Sappi Maastricht has reached an exciting milestone in its energy transition with the successful installation of a new steam accumulator at the Maastricht Mill.

Custom-built and delivered by Bilfinger België & Nederland, this impressive system plays a key role in advancing our sustainability and energy innovation initiatives.

The steam accumulator allows the mill to store surplus steam and reuse it when demand rises, improving overall energy efficiency and supporting the mill’s broader Energy Roadmap goals:

✔ More efficient energy use
✔ Reduced fuel consumption
✔ Lower CO₂ emissions
✔ Greater flexibility in the production process

The system will be integrated into Sappi’s new 15-bar steam network, working in smart coordination with internal energy sources—including two e-boilers and a gas-fired boiler. This integration creates a flexible and resilient energy system, ensuring that surplus energy is captured and optimally utilised rather than wasted.

This installation marks another meaningful step toward a lower-carbon, more sustainable future for Sappi Europe.
