Sappi North America has introduced LusterFSB OGR, a new oil and grease resistant (OGR) solid bleached sulfate (SBS) paperboard designed for food service packaging applications without the use of plastic coatings.

The new grade, available in 12 to 20 pt calipers, is engineered to deliver medium oil and grease resistance without polyethylene film. According to the company, this makes it both recyclable and suitable for home composting, offering an alternative to poly-coated materials commonly used in quick-service, takeout, and bakery packaging.

LusterFSB OGR is produced using fresh fiber on PM1, a paperboard machine at Sappi’s Somerset Mill in Skowhegan, Maine. The board features a smooth clay coating on one side for print quality, while the reverse side incorporates a proprietary grease barrier coating that also supports printing, allowing for two-sided design applications.

The product is intended for a range of uses including bakery boxes, fried chicken and nugget containers, burger and sandwich clamshells, as well as french fry trays and scoops. Its SBS-based construction enables converter scrap and offcuts to be recycled alongside standard SBS material, eliminating the need for separate handling required by poly-lined alternatives.

Paul Bortolan, Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Sappi North America, said the development responds to increasing demand for packaging solutions that reduce reliance on plastic while maintaining performance standards.

The company added that the board is supplied barrier-ready, allowing converters to bypass additional coating processes, which can simplify operations and reduce costs. LusterFSB OGR is currently available for customer qualification and commercial orders, with technical support provided for application testing and onboarding.
