Industrial engineering company SKF has opened a new laboratory for ceramic processes at its research center in Houten, the Netherlands, to accelerate the development and commercialization of hybrid bearings.

Hybrid bearings combine steel rings with ceramic rolling elements. The technology offers improved electrical insulation, lower weight and the potential to reduce friction by up to 50 percent.

The new laboratory will strengthen SKF’s capabilities across the entire manufacturing process, from raw materials to finished components. The facility is intended to support the development of ceramic processes and advance the commercialization of hybrid bearing technology.

SKF’s hybrid bearings have potential applications in aerospace, automation and electric motors, where electrical insulation, weight reduction and friction performance are relevant to component design and operation.

The investment expands SKF’s research capabilities in ceramic processing, supporting work across the production chain for hybrid bearing components.

The company has not provided further details on the laboratory’s investment value, operational capacity or timeline for commercializing products developed at the facility.
