Smurfit Westrock plc announced the permanent closure of one paper machine at its La Tuque, Quebec, mill.

The machine produces 127,000 tons annually of solid bleached sulfate (SBS) and has faced ongoing scale and cost challenges.

This decision strengthens the company's SBS portfolio and ensures long-term competitiveness of paperboard operations.

Smurfit Westrock will also close the extrusion facility in Pointe-aux-Trembles, Quebec, which converts La Tuque machine grades.

The closures result in workforce reductions of approximately 30 employees at La Tuque and 60 at Pointe-aux-Trembles.

The company offers career transition assistance, relocation opportunities where possible, and severance per policy and union agreements.

Laurent Sellier, President and CEO of Smurfit Westrock North America, stated: "This was a difficult but necessary decision to align with market realities and strengthen our long-term position."

He added: "We remain committed to our people, our operations in Canada and to delivering reliable, quality service to our customers."
