Smurfit Westrock has successfully commissioned a new Delta SPC 130 digital printing machine from Koenig & Bauer Durst at its Herzberg site. With this investment, the company is expanding its production capabilities in corrugated packaging and responding to growing demand for flexible, short-notice printing solutions.

The new digital press delivers precise print results on all common corrugated board grades, ranging from fine F-flute to robust double-wall. It achieves resolutions of up to 1,000 dpi, enabling photorealistic images, fine lines, and intense color areas, including high-contrast white printing. Because the process is fully digital, packaging can be produced without fixed minimum print runs, making it suitable for individual versions and personalized designs.

Customers benefit from rapid implementation of new designs and efficient processing of both small and large production runs. Digital printing also enables the integration of functional elements such as QR codes, EAN codes, and serial numbers directly onto the packaging. Content can be adapted flexibly, allowing marketing campaigns to be controlled and updated in real time.

Sustainability is another key focus of the new system. The inks and materials used are fiber- and water-based, odorless, and fully recyclable. According to Smurfit Westrock, the company covers the entire value chain from papermaking and packaging production through to recycling.

“With the new digital printing press, we are expanding our technological capabilities and simultaneously creating additional options for sustainable packaging solutions,” said Michael Illemann, General Manager of Herzberger Wellpappe. The aim is to support customers throughout the entire development process, from the initial idea to the finished product.

All packaging produced at the site complies with applicable quality and sustainability standards, including FSC certification and BRC guidelines. With this investment, Smurfit Westrock is strengthening the Herzberg location and further broadening its range of flexible, high-quality, and resource-efficient packaging solutions.
