Swedish forest industry group Södra has brought forward the launch of its “Tryggve” safety app following a recent storm, aiming to improve protection for individuals working alone in forest environments.

The decision comes as storm-damaged forests pose elevated risks, with more people entering affected areas for cleanup and inspection. Södra said the app is part of its broader effort to enhance safety for forest owners, contractors, and others who frequently work in isolated conditions.

The Tryggve app allows users to set a safety timer before undertaking high-risk tasks or movements. If the timer is not deactivated in time, the system automatically alerts pre-selected emergency contacts and shares the user’s last known location. In cases where emergency services are contacted via the app, location coordinates are transmitted directly to Sweden’s SOS Alarm system to support faster response times.

Södra stated that while working alone in storm-damaged forests is strongly discouraged, the early release of the app is intended to provide practical support for those who do so. The tool is designed to complement existing safety procedures rather than replace them.

Originally scheduled for release later in April, the app is now available for download on both Google Play and the App Store in Swedish and English.

Beyond forestry applications, Södra noted that the app can also be used in other situations where individuals may be alone and require an added layer of security, such as outdoor activities or travel at night.

Södra, founded in 1938, is Sweden’s largest forest-owner association, with more than 50,000 members and approximately 3,200 employees across its industrial operations.
