The Spanish Ambassador to the United Kingdom, Emma Aparici, visited Saica Group’s recycled paper mill near Manchester on 26 May, highlighting the company’s long-term investment in UK manufacturing and the circular economy.

The visit formed part of a programme of engagements with Spanish companies operating in the UK. Ambassador Aparici was accompanied by the Consul General of Spain in Manchester, Alejandro Polanco Mata, and was welcomed by Saica executives including Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Susana Alejandro, Sustainable Development & People Global Director Pilar Franca, and Saica Paper UK Plant Manager Darren Johnston.

During the visit, company representatives outlined Saica’s operations in the UK and discussed the company’s role in sustainable manufacturing and recycling. The delegation also toured the site’s paper production facilities, including Paper Machine 11 (PM11), which produces recycled paper for corrugated packaging applications using recovered paper sourced largely within the UK.

According to Saica, PM11 incorporates technologies designed to reduce water and energy consumption compared with conventional paper mills. The company said the facility plays a central role in its circular economy model by supporting material recovery and reducing landfill waste.

Ambassador Aparici said Spanish companies such as Saica contribute to economic ties between the UK and Spain through continued investment and sustainability initiatives.

“The company’s long-standing presence, continued investment and commitment to sustainability are a strong example of how Spanish industry contributes positively to local communities and to the UK’s green transition,” she said.

Saica entered the UK market in 2006 through the acquisition of two containerboard packaging plants and expanded further in 2008 with additional acquisitions. In 2012, the company opened its paper mill in Partington near Manchester.

The group now operates 18 facilities across the UK, including recycled paper production, corrugated and flexible packaging, and waste management operations. Saica employs more than 2,000 people in the country.

Susana Alejandro described the UK as a key market for the company and said the ambassador’s visit provided an opportunity to demonstrate the scale of Saica’s UK operations and its focus on sustainable industrial development.
