Steinbeis Papier Modernizes PM4 with New Forming and Dewatering Technology

Steinbeis Papier GmbH has completed the modernization of its PM4 paper machine at its Glückstadt facility, installing new forming and dewatering equipment aimed at improving sheet quality, energy efficiency, and production performance.

The project included the installation of two new suction couch rolls, including one replacement unit, and a TurboJetter headbox. According to the company, the upgrade is designed to optimize sheet formation, enhance energy efficiency, and further improve production quality.

The TurboJetter headbox is intended to provide uniform fiber distribution and improved sheet formation in the forming section. Its hydraulic design incorporates stainless steel lamellae and a double-diffuser concept to disperse and align the stock suspension. A pulsation damper with an air cushion is designed to reduce pressure fluctuations and support process stability.

The newly installed suction couch roll is designed to improve dewatering and web guidance by generating a vacuum that removes water from the paper web before its transfer to the press section. The Smart Suction Roll design features homogeneous vacuum distribution for stable web guidance, durable sealing systems intended to reduce maintenance intervals, optimized water removal to improve energy efficiency, and digital monitoring supported by sensors and augmented reality-assisted maintenance systems.

The PM4 modernization aligns with Steinbeis Papier's focus on sustainable production. The company states that it is the European market leader for graphic recycled papers and operates its Glückstadt mill using 100% recovered paper. The site's production processes are designed to emphasize resource conservation and energy efficiency.

Steinbeis Papier said the PM4 upgrade supports these objectives by improving product quality while further reducing the mill's environmental footprint. The company added that the project, completed in collaboration with Bellmer, demonstrates the role of technology partnerships in advancing sustainable paper manufacturing.
