Suzano, the world’s largest pulp producer, is investing R$25 million to enhance operations at its second mill in Três Lagoas, Mato Grosso do Sul, through the installation of a new oxidized white liquor (OWL) plant. The new facility is expected to begin operating in May and is designed to improve production efficiency while reducing raw material consumption.

According to Eduardo Ferraz, Director of Industrial Operations for Suzano in Três Lagoas, the investment is part of the company’s strategy to combine competitiveness with environmental and social responsibility. He said the project is expected to deliver productivity gains and optimize resource use, contributing to more efficient and sustainable operations while also supporting the local economy.

The Installation Environmental License for the project was issued by Imasul in February. Construction is already under way and is generating approximately 70 temporary jobs, while also creating opportunities for local suppliers and service providers.

The project includes the installation of a new OWL plant, which uses a chemical solution to improve the efficiency of pulp production processes. The technology helps optimize the use of raw materials, particularly caustic soda, reducing operating costs and supporting sustainability objectives.

The new production line is scheduled to enter operation following the completion of the mill’s general shutdown, which began in April. Ferraz said implementing the project during the planned maintenance period allows the company to introduce innovation and operational improvements while existing processes are being reviewed.

More than 2,500 professionals are involved in maintenance and optimization activities across Suzano’s two mills in Três Lagoas, supporting efforts to strengthen safety, sustainability, and operational competitiveness in the region.
