Packaging and paper company Mondi has confirmed a fatal shooting incident at its mill in Richards Bay on Wednesday morning, resulting in two employee deaths and one injury.
According to the company, a gunman opened fire on colleagues, killing one person before turning the weapon on himself. A third individual sustained injuries and was transported to hospital for treatment. Authorities have not yet released further details on the identities of those involved.
Mondi stated that emergency protocols were immediately activated following the incident, and the site was secured. Police responded to the scene and have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
In a statement, Mondi South Africa CEO Jason Smith expressed condolences to those affected. “The safety and well-being of our employees remains our top priority. We are providing support to our employees and have taken the necessary steps to ensure the site remains safe,” he said.
The company added that it will continue to cooperate fully with law enforcement authorities and will provide additional information as it becomes available.
The incident marks a serious workplace tragedy at one of South Africa’s major industrial operations, with investigations ongoing to determine the motive and sequence of events.
