Unifor, Canada's largest private sector union, formally requested answers from Kruger Inc. about the future of the Corner Brook Pulp and Paper Mill in Newfoundland. National President Lana Payne sent a letter urging an urgent meeting with Kruger leadership.
Workers at Kruger-owned Corner Brook Pulp and Paper Ltd. belong to Unifor Locals 64, 242, 96, 57N, 60N, while Deer Lake Power employees are in Local 495. The mill marked its 100th anniversary last September, a milestone for its roughly 300 employees and the community.
Payne, forestry union representative and Federal Forestry Sector Transformation Task Force member, expressed concerns over unclear plans. Key questions include Kruger's business strategy, potential permanent closures and layoffs, new operations or products, shift to energy production, and support for workers and Corner Brook.
Unifor advocates for transparency and engagement with workers, the union, the community, and Newfoundland and Labrador government. Payne emphasized forging a sustainable future for forestry workers nationwide
