UPM Specialty Materials and Felix Schoeller have introduced a recyclable, fibre-based barrier solution designed for flexible food packaging applications such as chocolate and snack bars, the companies said on Thursday.

The development responds to increasing demand for recyclable packaging and aims to support compliance with upcoming requirements under the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR). The solution is based on UPM’s Solide Lucent packaging paper, combined with Felix Schoeller’s customizable barrier coatings.

According to the companies, the concept allows for tailored barrier performance depending on end-use requirements. Coating configurations can be adjusted to provide protection against oxygen, moisture, grease, as well as to meet sealing and mechanical performance needs.

Felix Schoeller said the base paper material offers consistent runnability on coating lines, balanced mechanical properties and strong printability. UPM added that the smooth and dense surface of Solide Lucent enables lower coating weights while maintaining performance on high-speed production lines. The material is available in multiple grammages to suit different applications.

The companies stated that the collaboration is intended to help brand owners balance performance and recyclability while adapting to evolving regulatory expectations. The solution’s recyclability has been assessed using CEPI version 3 (February 2025) and evaluated under the 4evergreen protocol scorecard version 2.0 (January 2025).

The new packaging concept will be showcased at Interpack 2026, taking place in Düsseldorf, Germany, from May 7 to 13.
