UPM Specialty Materials and Royal Vaassen have introduced a high-barrier, fibre-based paper packaging solution designed for pet food treats and snacks, targeting stricter regulatory requirements under the EU’s Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR).

The companies said the PFAS-free packaging is fully recyclable and intended to replace traditional plastic and aluminum laminates commonly used for oily and aromatic pet treats. The solution is based on Royal Vaassen’s Barryrwrap concept, engineered to provide resistance against grease, aroma, light, moisture, and oxygen—key performance requirements in the segment.

According to Royal Vaassen, its “Barrywrap Everest” grade offers the highest barrier performance within its range. “It preserves freshness, aroma, and taste throughout shelf life,” said Mark Gerritsen, Sales Manager at Royal Vaassen, adding that it enables pet food brands to transition to circular packaging without compromising product protection or consumer experience.

The solution uses UPM Solide™ Lucent packaging paper as a base material. UPM stated that the paper’s smooth surface, density, and convertibility allow for reduced coating weights while maintaining strength for high-speed processing. Multiple grammage options are available to suit different applications.

Heli Borgström, Director of Packaging at UPM Specialty Materials, said the material also supports high-quality printability and shelf appeal, while offering a natural paper look aligned with sustainability-focused branding.

The packaging is compliant with food contact standards and recyclability criteria, assessed using CEPI/4EG Technical Recyclability Score (v2.0, January 2025) and PTS RH 021/97 Cat II. The companies plan to showcase the solution at Interpack in Düsseldorf, Germany, from May 7 to 13.
