Valmet launches the world’s first fully non-contact, nuclear-free quality control system (QCS) for tissue production. This solution delivers real-time insight into key tissue properties without physically touching the sheet. By eliminating contact and radioactive sources, the system enhances operational safety, reduces web break risks, and enables more stable and efficient production.
The breakthrough technology provides tissue manufacturers with real-time visibility into key properties such as dry weight, basis weight, moisture, softness, and creping behavior, enabling more accurate and reliable measurements, as well as enhanced control performance. Designed for demanding tissue manufacturing environments, its advanced measurement window cleaning system, supported by modern simulation tools, allows maintenance-free operation even in dusty conditions and when using recycled raw materials. This innovation significantly improves production efficiency, process stability, and product quality.
“This represents a significant step change in tissue quality control, paving the way toward more autonomous tissue production. The solution enables operators to run processes with greater confidence through fully automated operation, minimizing the risk of web breaks and supporting consistently stable performance. By empowering operators to focus on higher-value tasks, it enhances operational efficiency, improves runnability for tissue converting lines, and helps lower operating costs,” says Teemu Houhala, Business Manager, Quality Management System, Automation Solutions, Valmet.
Non-contact measurements to enhance quality and production performance
One of the key innovations of the new Valmet IQ Softness & Crepe Measurement is its fully non-contact design. It provides continuous visibility into changes in tissue softness and surface quality, helping ensure consistent product quality and improved production stability.
Valmet IQ Transmission Spectrum Measurement also utilizes non-contact, non-nuclear technology to deliver real-time online insights into fiber and moisture proportions. These insights enable tissue producers to optimize material usage and support more sustainable operations.
Proactive control through real-time crepe and process insight
The new Valmet IQ Crepe Monitoring Application combines process data and measurement information into actionable operational insight, enabling operators to proactively respond to process variations before they escalate into quality deviations or web breaks.
Designed specifically for tissue production environments where sheet sensitivity and runnability are critical, the integrated solution helps ensure stable operations and consistently high product quality.
