Wildfires Force Temporary Shutdown at Smurfit Westrock Paper Mill in France

Smurfit Westrock has temporarily suspended operations at its Cellulose du Pin paper mill in Biganos, southwest France, as wildfires continue to sweep through the region, according to Printweek.

The Biganos facility, located southwest of Bordeaux, halted production after local authorities ordered the evacuation of surrounding areas while firefighters worked to contain the rapidly spreading wildfires. Around 250,000 people have been evacuated across the south-western regions of Gironde and Landes, with extreme heat and strong winds continuing to hamper firefighting efforts.

A Smurfit Westrock spokesperson said the company suspended operations at the Cellulose du Pin mill following the evacuation order.

“As wildfires continue to impact southwest France, Smurfit Westrock Cellulose du Pin paper mill in Biganos has temporarily suspended operations. This comes as part of the local authorities’ decision to evacuate the surrounding area.

“The safety of our people remains our highest priority. We have taken the necessary measures to protect our colleagues and our assets, and we will resume operations as soon as it is safe to do so, in line with guidance from local authorities.

“Smurfit Westrock continues to support the ongoing efforts of emergency services and volunteers to contain the fire and prevent its spread, as well as providing support to the local community.

“Our thoughts remain with everyone affected by the wildfires.”

Smurfit Westrock operates three paper mills in France, located in Biganos, Rethel and Saillat-sur-Vienne.
